Larimar

The Caribbean Gem That Reflects the Vibrant Blues of Sea and Sky

What Is Larimar?

Larimar is a rare blue gemstone that belongs to the mineral family known as pectolite. While pectolite can be found in many parts of the world, Larimar stands out because of its unique blue color. This striking shade is created by the presence of copper within the stone. The color ranges from light sky blue to deep ocean blue, making each piece visually unique. Because of this special appearance, Larimar is considered a true gemstone rather than a common mineral.

A Gem Found in Only One Place

Larimar is one of the rarest gemstones on Earth because it has been discovered in only one location. It comes from a remote mountain range in the Dominican Republic. No other deposits have been found anywhere else in the world. Its beautiful blue tones are often compared to the sea and sky of the Caribbean. For this reason, Larimar is widely known as “the Caribbean Gem.”

Discovery and Naming

The first official mention of Larimar dates back to 1916, when a Spanish missionary asked for permission to mine the stone. However, this request was denied, and the gemstone remained largely unknown. In 1974, Larimar was rediscovered by Norman Rilling, a member of the United States Peace Corps, and Dominican artisan Miguel Méndez. They found fragments of the stone along a beach. Méndez later named the gem by combining his daughter’s name, Larisa, with the Spanish word for sea, “mar.” Larimar is also known by alternative names such as the “Atlantis Stone” and the “Dolphin Stone.”

Properties, Meanings, and Care

Larimar has a hardness of 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale, which means it should be handled with care. It is often associated with peace, healing, love, and improved communication. Many people believe it helps with clear speech and emotional balance.  To clean it safely, gently scrub the stone with a soft toothbrush using warm, soapy water.
